The country view of gym and fitness in Singapore

Singapore's gym listings average 4.6 stars, and 127 of the 180 rated venues sit at 4.5 or above. For a whole country's worth of fitness venues, that is a tight, high band, and it changes how you should read the numbers: at this level, review volume separates venues better than the star figure does.

Geography is the other headline. Every one of the six most-reviewed venues sits outside the downtown core, in Hougang, Toa Payoh, Sembawang, Punggol and Clementi, and all six hold 5.0 averages. Toa Payoh alone accounts for two of them. The pattern is clear enough to act on: the heartlands carry much of Singapore's best-reviewed training, so searching along your MRT line will often beat searching around the office.

The category covers more than weight floors. Boxing gyms, 24-hour chains and small-group studios all appear near the top of the listings, and the single most-reviewed entry in the country is a personal-trainer certification school with 3,797 reviews, a hint at how much of the local scene is built around coaching. Depending on how much structure you want, Personal Training and Fitness Classes are both well represented.
