About
Based in Central, Hong Kong, the Asian Academy of Family Therapy (AAFT) is a charitable, non-profit hub uniting leading family therapy educators, clinicians, policy makers, researchers, and social scientists across Asia. With a clear commitment to systemic thinking in diverse social and clinical contexts, AAFT advances family therapy research, training, and practice through a vibrant, cross-regional community.
AAFT’s mission is culture-centered: it promotes annual conferences, cross-regional training and research development, and a professional accreditation system that reflects the unique norms and languages of Asian regions. Grounded in shared values such as collectivism, extended family systems, and a strong sense of belonging, it is the first organization dedicated specifically to the development of family therapy in the Asian region. Its membership spans Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Mainland China, Singapore, and Malaysia, providing a platform for systemic thinkers and practitioners to exchange and collaborate.
Formed by the group that created the HKU Family Institute, AAFT began as the Academy of Family Therapy in 2012 and became the Asian Academy of Family Therapy in 2015. This lineage anchors its work in rigorous training, regional scholarship, and a sustained commitment to culturally attuned practice.
Home to a Family Therapy Center and a Transgenerational Center, as well as a School Partnership Program, AAFT extends its mission from academy to clinic. Its Family Therapy Center, supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, has been described as an oasis in the city—offering a welcoming space for all ages and family members to pause, reconnect, and repair relationships. The center’s platform also shares family stories, clinical insights, youth reflections, couple relationship topics, industry updates, and transgenerational content.
AAFT’s work is informed by major collaborations—such as the comparative “Asian couples in negotiation” study across Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, featured in Family Process and credited with challenging common myths about Asian families. For practitioners, AAFT offers basic and advanced certificate training, a members’ webinar series, and hands-on clinical learning—all shaped by Asian cultural contexts. Whether you seek a community of systemic practitioners or family therapy grounded in the lived realities of Asian families, AAFT offers a trusted platform for meaningful growth and collaboration.
